Capacity Development on Futures Thinking &
Strategic Foresight: Futures and Foresight in
Engineering and Technology Education (FY 2024)

University Futures

As part of the continuous efforts to advance the futures of engineering and technology education and the indigenization of futures thinking through Hiraya Foresight, sustainable and intentional capacity development initiatives are essential. The UNESCO International Commission on the Futures of Education stated that no trend is destiny since multiple alternative futures are possible, thus a new social contract for education needs to allow us to think differently about learning and the relationships between students, teachers, knowledge, and the world. This can be done by the use of powerful tools of Futures Thinking and Strategic Foresight.

The Asian Development Bank's 2020 publication entitled Futures Thinking in Asia and the Pacific highlighted that futures thinking (the theory and methods) and foresight (the practical application) are sets of approaches and tools designed to help their users identify emerging issues, negotiate uncertainties, articulate scenarios, develop a common vision of a desired future through wide participation, introduce innovation, and design robust policies and strategies.

With this, Batangas State University, The National Engineering University, will continue to strengthen its capacity in recognizing and adopting futures thinking and consequently employ strategic foresights in various programs, activities and projects as part of the university's pursuit to be the true leader in engineering and technology education.

This capacity development initiative program targets to deepen the administrators, researchers, extensionists and senior faculty members in the extents of futures thinking, foresight, creativity, innovation, and leadership through University Futures Masterclass as well as Research, Innovation and\ Conferences in the fields of Engineering and Technology Education and Futures Thinking. Likewise, the program will remain to support National Engineering Education Development (NEED) sub-components.
