The BatStateU Team, Spartan Kingsmen, being shown to be one of the winners in the 2020 International Energy and Electricity Market Business Decision Simulation Online Competition organized by the Shanghai University of Electric Power.
A team of Electrical Engineering students, who call themselves the Spartan Kingsmen, received second prize at the 2020 International Energy and Electricity Market Business Decision Simulation Online Competition, hosted by the Shanghai University of Electric Power (SUEP), in awarding ceremonies held virtually on November 6, 2020.
The competition is an annual quiz event participated in by engineering students from countries all over Asia. This year, 53 teams from six different countries joined the competition, which ran from September 30 to November 1, 2020. Two other teams from BatStateU participated – Red Wanderers and BatStateU Lumiere – both receiving special prizes.
The Spartan Kingsmen were composed of Russ Jacob Pacia, (Team leader), Darell Bien Pascua, Vincent Abubo, and Kier Paolo Doce. They were guided by their coach, Engr. Rodel Tejada, Instructor at the Electrical Engineering department of BatStateU Pablo Borbon Main II.
The competition aimed to gather the brightest minds in energy and electricity market business in order to solve various business problems. The objective is to operate a company in a competitive electricity market through business simulation, provided by Cesim Company from Finland. Teams from China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines took part in the event. BatStateU is the only university from the Philippines that joined the competition.
In an interview, the team shared how they were able to gather experiences in a real world setting. They said that the competition equipped them with industry knowledge and developed not only engineering-related skills, but also competence in the field of business and technopreneurship.
BatStateU President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo officially accepts the invitation to host the 2021 competition.
During the ceremonies, it was announced that Batangas State University will host next year’s International Energy and Electricity Market Business Decision Simulation Competition. BatStateU President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo officially accepted the invitation, and remarked that the university will prepare for this event, which could be held physically or virtually. It is expected that the competition will attract more teams from more countries next year, which is yet another opportunity for global collaboration through friendly competition.
