Innovators discuss eng’g, S&T for the ‘new normal’ in a virtual int’l conference

The Batangas State University successfully staged its 5th International Research Conference on Innovations in Engineering, Science and Technology (IRCIEST V) with the theme “Innovations in Engineering, Science and Technology for the New Normal and Beyond” held virtually for the first time via FLOOR platform, Dec. 6-7. More than 470 participants from local higher education institutions (HEIs), private institutions, and business organizations joined the knowledge-sharing event which served as a dynamic platform for S&T and engineering students, professionals, technopreneurs, and researchers to share advances in various fields and stages of technology applications and commercialization. According to University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, IRCIEST’s main goal is to enjoin researchers from different institutions across the globe to do more collaborative work to provide innovative solutions to the immediate problems in the ‘new normal’. “The Batangas State University remains committed to strengthening and enhancing the capabilities of our researchers as we continue to build upon our commitment to forging a country that is able to reap the fruits of innovation in engineering, science and technology in the knowledge-based economy,” Pres. Ronquillo shared during his opening remarks. Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato T. Dela Peña delivered the keynote address. He presented various projects DOST has crafted to inspire more life-changing innovations in the new normal through the Science and Technology for a Resilient Community against the Pandemic or STRAP program. “As part of the scientific community, we will continue to find solutions that our rich human resources can put up through our support for science and technology projects. We need to collaborate and partner more with our universities and research institutions to take part in our endeavors in research and development,” Sec. Dela Peña concluded in his keynote address. The conference also featured a keynote lecture from Ms. Salla Eckhardt, Director of Transformation Services of Microsoft on “Digital Transformation in the New Normal and Beyond” as well as plenary sessions, panel discussions, and masterclasses with innovators from the Philippines, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, and United States as resource speakers. Batangas State University is a Level IV state university in the CALABARZON region, and the only SUC in the country accredited by the US Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for its Engineering and Information Technology programs. It is rated 3 stars in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) list of top universities and has the highest number of ASEAN Engineers faculty among Philippine higher education institutions.

University gears toward future-proofing engineering through its 1st Int’l Conference on Innovations in Eng’g Education

The University’s Center for Innovation in Engineering Education (CIEE)—the first of its kind in the country—is set to stage its 1st International Conference on Innovations in Engineering Education (ICIEE 2021) to be held virtually via Zoom Webinars on November 10 and 11, 2021.  This is the first major-scale event of the Center since its establishment in December 2020 and formal launching earlier in March coincident with the celebration of the World Engineering Day 2021. The CIEE serves as the University’s official arm in advancing engineering education. As the industry undergoes radical technological advancement, the University remains true to its mission of producing leaders by providing a 21st century learning environment through innovations in education, further driven by the ICIEE 2021.  In addition, the Center believes that the conduct of the conference is both timely and relevant to the education and industry sectors as they catch pace in producing future-proof graduates who will become professionals capable of meeting the industry’s rising demands.  “As engineering moves forward, so must engineering education. Innovation is vital to our economic, social, and environmental futures, and the present situation encourages urgent, collaborative investments on both the local and global levels necessary for the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” reads the conference brief. Championing the theme “Engineering Educators: Active Drivers of Innovation,” ICIEE 2021 aims to serve as a platform for engineering professionals to spark intellectual discussions, refresh perspectives, and share expertise, best practices, and experience that will benefit the academe, industry, and pertinent government bodies, along with other key sectors involved in nation- and-world building.  The two-day event is charged with 16 distinguished speakers from across the globe to cover a number of relevant thematic areas in plenary sessions, panel discussions, and masterclasses.  Notable speakers include Dr. Sheryl Sorby, immediate past president and fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and CIEE advisory board member to serve as the event keynote speaker, and Prof. Dr. Gong Ke, World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) President to discuss, alongside the International Centre for Engineering Education (ICEE), “The Continuing Role of Engineering Education in the Attainment of the SDGs: UNESCO Engineering Report 2021”, among many others. The ICIEE 2021 is organized in time for the celebration of the College of Engineering’s 50th anniversary. Since 1971, the College of Engineering in BatStateU, formerly Pablo Borbon Memorial Institute of Technology (PBMIT), has been the institution’s premier college that offers its flagship programs.  The conference will also feature part of the Innovation Challenge Competition, a thematic competition that challenges students of higher education institutions (HEIs) to ideate, innovate, and pitch solutions addressing SDGs. The top ten (10) teams of the said competition will be announced prior to the closing of the ICIEE 2021. Said teams shall undergo an innovation program to improve the minimum viable products, conduct validation activities, and prepare for the final demo and pitching day scheduled on December 6 and 7 during the 5th International Research Conference on the Innovations in Engineering, Science, and Technology (IRCIEST V). The CIEE welcomes academicians, educators, researchers, industry practitioners, and leaders of global organizations in engineering education to join the international conference. Registration is open and may be accessed here: https://bit.ly/ICIEE2021_Registration. More details on schedule and fees can be accessed via the conference website at https://batstate-u.edu.ph/iciee/#/main/home.

TOWN HALL ON COVID-19

The Batangas State University, in coordination with the Department of Health (DOH) will be conducting a university-wide webinar on COVID-19 vaccination on April 16. Entitled “Town Hall on COVID-19 for Batangas State University”, the awareness webinar aims to orient and guide the whole Red Spartan community on matters regarding the COVID-19 vaccine, as spearheaded by the Health Services Office and Human Resource and Management Office, in coordination with DOH. The arrival of COVID-19 vaccines in the country is a major step in relation to the Philippine National Deployment and Vaccination Plan (NDVP) for COVID-19 Vaccines. Based from the recent surveys conducted by the Octa Research Group, there are still people who have yet to decide whether they will avail the available vaccines or not, because they are “not sure if the vaccine is safe and effective.” The Batangas State University, being an institution of higher learning, is one with the national government in ensuring a unified and coordinated vaccination campaign as provided under the NDVP. This is along with the end goal of undertaking proactive measures necessary to assure health and safety of all Filipinos. Representatives from DOH are invited speakers to the program to discuss facts that the public has to know about the COVID-19 vaccines.
