The National Engineering University, now in the List of Top 100 Innovative Universities in the World
True to its dictum “Leading Innovations”, Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU-The NEU) was recognized as the 90th most innovative university in the globe by the prestigious World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) 2023. As a ranking system that evaluates the university’s real contributions to the society, highlighting creative and innovative approaches of universities’ research and educational programs, WURI 2023 has taken cognizance of the University’s innovative programs and initiatives such as: the Knowledge, Innovation and Science Technology (KIST) Park, Verde Island Passage Center for Oceanographic Research and Aquatic Life Sciences (VIP CORALS), and Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) which all entered in the global top 50 in the fourth industrial revolution (27th), ethical value (31st), and student mobility and openness categories (47th). “More than global recognition, this milestone affirms our strong commitment to making lasting impact to the society and engineering the future towards national development. Aggressively, we will continue leading innovations, transforming lives, and building the nation through our pioneering and impactful programs and initiatives”, said Dr. Tirso A. BatStateU-The NEU and BCRMF partner for youth-led environmental solutions
Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU-The NEU), and Batangas Coastal Resources Management Foundation (BCRMF) partnered for a unique project called the Batangas Social Innovation Challenge (BASIC). This initiative intends Batangueño youths to proactively take responsibility for their environment by promoting social innovations that address environmental challenges in Batangas Province. Through this project, BASIC shall invite youth leaders, students, young professionals, and out-of-school youth between 18 to 30 with determination, creativity, innovativeness, dedication, and passion for saving the environment and improving the environmental condition of their locality or community. Designed to create a multi-disciplinary, multi-agency, and multicultural approach to addressing environmental issues in the province, BASIC will also involve its participants in intensive design thinking workshops, proposal writing write shops, group mentoring, and a proposal pitching competition as part of the project. BASIC will choose the five best social innovations addressing environmental problems in Batangas Province and will receive ₱100,000 to implement them. This Batangas Social Innovation Challenge was officially launched on March 20, with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) by BatStateU-The NEU and BCRMF. The event was graced by BatStateU-The NEU officials led by University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo and BCRMF’s member organizations led by its President Mr. Rey Nelson B. Amparo. Overall, this collaborative project of BatStateU-The NEU and BCRMF is an encouraging step in fostering social innovation in the Philippines and an inspiring move towards a more sustainable future.
BatStateU-The NEU accedes to world-class status as a CDIO collaborator, further strengthening the Philippines’ Engineering Education
Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU-The NEU), achieved yet another significant milestone with the official approval of its world-class status as a CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) collaborator. CDIO is known as a global educational framework for engineering education whose goal is to train the leaders of tomorrow in engineering. CDIO gives students a well-rounded education with a focus on engineering basics and real-world systems and products. Leading universities worldwide have adopted this initiative, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Tsinghua University, and the Chalmers University of Technology. As a collaborator, BatStateU-The NEU extends its network of academic institutions worldwide, allowing for the sharing of best practices and fostering a dynamic, experiential, and collaborative learning environment. “We are delighted to become one of the three collaborators of CDIO in the Philippines, and one of the 52 in Asia, joining a global community of 183 universities committed to providing students with a truly unique and transformative educational experience,” said Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, President of BatStateU-The NEU. “Its approach aligns perfectly with our mission to provide a rigorous and relevant education that prepares our students to become industry-ready graduates and build a stronger nation,” Dr. Ronquillo underscored. BatStateU-The NEU partners with Livepool Hope University to advance Robotics Engineering
Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU-The NEU) has formed a collaboration with Liverpool Hope University of the United Kingdom (UK) focusing on projects in the robotics engineering field. The partnership was sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on November 3, 2022, during the Mission Visit to Europe, which the British Council facilitated. The visit was part of the itinerary of (BatStateU-The NEU) delegates headed by University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo and the University’s Transnational Education (TNE) Team. The partnership with Liverpool Hope University opened doors for them to visit BatStateU-The NEU last December 5, 2022, headed by Prof. Raouf Naguib and Prof. Anuradha Ranasinghe, along with the British Council Philippines representative Mr. Daniel Gonzalvo. Upon their arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the BatStateUThe NEU officials, led by Dr. Ronquillo and the University’s TNE Team. They were given a tour of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Environment Research Hub (STEER Hub). The highlight of the visit was the professorial lecture presented by Prof. Anuradha Ranasinghe entitled “Haptic Perceptions in Robotics.” Driven by the idea that robotics is inclusive and interdisciplinary, she elucidated Guided Haptics, Miniaturized-haptic based Sensors, and significant issues in the field, including vision-touch interactions, affective touch, and its applications. She also shared her and her team’s experiences working on various robotics projects. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, which Prof. Ranasinghe gladly answered, emphasizing the importance and advantages of robotics in our daily lives. Assoc. Prof. Albertson D. Amante, Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension Services, gave a closing remark, commending the efforts of Liverpool Hope University, particularly Prof. Ranasinghe, for sharing their knowledge and ideas with the BatStateU delegates. This collaboration between BatStateU-The NEU and Liverpool Hope University is a promising development in robotics engineering. With both institutions committed to advancing research and innovation in this area, there is no doubt that the partnership will bring forth exciting breakthroughs and contribute to the growth of robotics engineering.
BatStateU-The NEU unifies with Lingnan University to strengthen extension services through global partnership
Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU-The NEU), and the Lingnan University of Hong Kong forged a partnership to strengthen their extension services programs and expand their reach into developing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable communities. The collaboration is set to benefit various areas, including Barangay Talib Pandayan, Batangas City, and Talaibon, Ibaan, Batangas. Dr. NG Aik Min, Senior Project Officer -Office of Service at Lingnan University, visited BatStateU-The NEU on December 21, 2022. Welcomed by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), Dr. Min, and BatStateU-The NEU officials checked the office’s programs and its best practices. Brgy. Talahib Pandayan, Batangas City’s most disaster-prone area, was identified by CDRRMO as a primary recipient area. The two teams paid a visit to the community on December 22, 2023. Following a courtesy call at the Talahib Pandayan Brgy. Hall, the team conducted community exposure where they interviewed residents of Talahib Pandayan’s selected villages. They identified hazardous areas near coastal, lowland, and upland residences. Dr. Min listened carefully to the community’s difficulties and validated their concerns. Following the tour to Talahib Pandayan, the team traveled to Talaibon, Ibaan, Batangas, where Dr. Mandane-Garcia took Dr. Min to the residents’ “tinapahan” store. The store features a BatStateU extension project that teaches women to make tinapa for income generation. Locals enthusiastically accepted the visitors and demonstrated how they produce and sell tinapa. Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, President of BatStateU-TheNEU, met and toured Dr. Min at the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Environment Research (STEER) Hub. They also met Dr. Min’s colleague, Dr. Alber KO, through a Zoom meeting, where Dr. Ko highlighted his outstanding work and innovative efforts. He discussed his experience in mechanical engineering, artificial intelligence, and robotics. As part of his academic study, he created miniature robots for search and rescue. Dr. Ko and his team volunteered with MSF and the Red Cross as disaster relief and risk management volunteers for over ten years. Dr. Ko emphasized the goal of creating collaborations with other colleges to produce more programs on disaster relief, risk, and emergency management. He underscored the Lingnan Entrepreneurship Project, the Carbon Care Innolab, where they developed air purifiers as part of their efforts. These purifiers will be distributed to Hong Kong’s small residences, which are notably less typical in size. Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo commended Dr. Ko for Lingnan University’s significant accomplishments in Humanitarian Technology, stating that it aligns with BatStateU-The NEU’s mandate to develop technologies for humanity. Dr. Ronquillo also sealed BatStateU’s participation in Lingnan University’s upcoming incubation program. This partnership will undoubtedly strengthen the extension services programs of both universities and contribute to creating sustainable communities, ultimately leading to positive change.
Chinese delegates visit at BatStateU-The NEU marks a significant step in bolstering Philippines-China partnership
Delegates from China arrived at Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU-The NEU) to explore new opportunities for cooperation in the field of technical vocational education, marking a significant step forward in the Philippines-China relationship. The Philippine-Sino Education and Technology Center organized the visit, which took place on February 9, 2023, with the goal of establishing the “Belt and Road” E-Commerce Valley Philippine International Cooperation Center. “As the National Engineering University that also excels in technology education and as the owner-developer of the country’s first Knowledge, Innovation, and Science Technology (KIST) Park, it will be mutually beneficial if we work in partnership for the promotion of the “Belt and Road” E-Commerce Valley Philippine International Cooperation Center and other exchanges between our countries for technical vocational education. The development and acceleration of digital skills and young entrepreneurs for an inclusive digital economy, through the Cooperation, we believe is critically important,” Vice President for Administration and Finance, Atty. Luzviminda C. Rosales shared. During the official visit, the Chinese delegates had the opportunity to meet with university officials and discuss the possible areas of collaboration while also getting a tour of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Environment Research (STEER) Hub and the first of its kind BatStateU KIST Park. Aimed at fostering cooperation that will be beneficial to both countries, the possible areas of cooperation focus on digital e-commerce research, faculty exchange, international business forums, seminars and workshops among students and faculty, and other academic collaboration on technical vocational education. This heralded a new age of Philippine-Chinese exchange and collaboration.
BatStateU-The NEU welcomes Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Dr. Peter Laszlo, a Rector’s representative of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences paid a social visit to Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU-The NEU) to discuss the possibility of collaborations on academic, research and extension, February 3. The delegation was led by Dr. Laszlo and Ms. Anna Ramilo, Executive Assistant to the Head of the Commercial Section Embassy of Hungary Manila, and was cordially welcomed by University President, Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo. During their visit, they held discussions with Atty. Noel Alberto S. Omandap, Vice President for Development and External Affairs, Dr. Teodorica G. Ani, Director of External Affairs, accompanied by BatStateU Lobo Director Dr. Romel U. Briones, and Director of Research, Dr. Rosenda A. Bronce. They exchanged viewpoints and concepts for future research partnerships in organic farming, food processing, irrigation, and technology transfer. Scholarships for faculty members were also discussed in furthering the University’s goals of providing high-quality education and cutting-edge research opportunities. “This visit has created the groundwork for a long-term and mutually beneficial partnership that will pave the way for greater advancements in the field of agriculture and education in the Philippines,” Dr. Ronquillo said.

Batangas State University, The National Engineering University continues to support the advancement of women’s rights in this year’s National Women’s Month Celebration. Embracing the new recurring theme from 2023 to 2028: “WE for gender equality and inclusive society” which is both a positive affirmation and a call to action, it emphasizes the idea that growth must be inclusive and that the environment we are building must provide equal opportunities to all Filipinos. This March, through the initiative BatStateU Gender and Development (GAD) Advocacies Office, the University’s Women and Everyone join the pursuit of gender equality.
Filipino students dominate International stage and claim Victory at IPFEST Indonesia 2023
BATANGAS CITY – Batangas State University, The Philippines’ National Engineering University has once again made their mark on international stage as a team of BS Petroleum Engineering students raised our Philippine Flag higher with their achievements at the prestigious Integrated Petroleum Festival (IPFEST) 2023 Smart Competition held in Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia on February 24. Led by their coach, Engr. Miguel Paulo B. Abas, Team Barrack Oil composed of Nick Audrei R. Manila, Selwyn M. Medrano, and Rhyan Antonio G. Evea emerged as champions, while the Team Trioil and Error consisted of John Carlo Doria, Marcus Gabriel A. Gutierrez, and Russel Vincent V. Manalo, respectively, clinched the 1st runner-up spot. Conquering the four stages of the competition including : Online Preliminary stage, Elimination stage, Semi Final, and Grand Final, the teams defeated several institutions from across Southeast Asia including teams from Indonesia and Algeria, which makes their victory even more astounding. “We are incredibly proud of our Red Spartans for their outstanding achievement at IPFEST 2023. We hope this victory inspires them to follow their passion and strive for excellence in their respective disciplines. Their achievement, which brought glory and pride to the country, serves as an inspiration to the entire Red Spartan community,” Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, the University president of BatStateU-The NEU remarked. This victory of BatStateU-The NEU students is a testimony to their unrelenting tenacity, extraordinary talent, and exceptional teamwork as well as to their capacity to raise the bar for the future of petroleum engineers. It once again proved its leading position in engineering education by providing quality education to produce top-notch petroleum engineering graduates who are future-ready and well-equipped to take on challenges in the world. Bearing the theme “Understanding the A to Z of Oil and Gas as A Strategy For Energy Transition,” this year’s Smart Competition is one of the main event of IPFEST 2023 which challenged the brightest minds from various universities across Southeast Asia to showcase their knowledge in the oil and gas industries by answering questions in a rally system and delivering their answers quickly and precisely.
