Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU), proudly inaugurated the 10-storey Higher Education Building, named the Emilio Aguinaldo Building, a towering landmark that stands as the tallest academic structure in the region. The ceremony, held on January 23, marked a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation. The event welcomed esteemed guests, with Director Nympha R. Manalastas, of the Department of Budget and Management Region IV-A (CALABARZON), serving as the keynote speaker. In her address, she shared profound insights into the role of educational infrastructure in national development and underscored the importance of visionary projects like the Emilio Aguinaldo Building in achieving the “Bagong Pilipinas.” She challenged the BatStateU community to make themselves a vital part of the institution for the future of Filipino engineers and the nation. According to him, the realization of this vision, a 271-million-peso architectural feat, after five years, was made possible by the coordinated efforts and devoted actions of various BatStateU offices, prioritizing both quality and timeliness. BatStateU ascends to rank 300th globally in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking

From its 351st rank in 2022 among 1050 higher education institutions (HEIs) across the globe, Batangas State University (BatStateU) enters the top 300 most sustainable universities among 1,183 universities worldwide in the 2023 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking. Initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010, this ranking evaluates universities worldwide based on their green campus initiatives and environmental sustainability efforts through 39 indicators across 6 key criteria. This significant leap forward further solidifies BatStateU’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. The marked improvement in this year’s ranking signifies the University’s deliberate efforts to enhance its environmental initiatives since its inaugural participation. The University has shown substantial improvements in its sustainability indicator scores between the UI GreenMetric rankings of 2023 and 2022. The university displayed notable enhancements across various areas, particularly an impressive 63.37% increase in energy and climate change, a commendable 30% advancement in water management initiatives, and a 12.80% progress in transportation sustainability initiatives. Centered around the theme “Propelling Transformations and Accelerating Reforms through Research and Innovations,” this year’s IRCIEST facilitated in-depth discussions among researchers, academics, industry professionals, and students from both national and international landscapes to delve into the forefronts of cutting-edge advancements in various thematic areas. On the heels of its recent recognition in the Top 100 Global Innovative Universities, Batangas State University, The National Engineering University secured a 601st-800th spot among 1,591 universities from 112 countries/regions in the Impact Rankings of the Times Higher Education (THE), released June 1, 2023. It emerged 4th highest-ranked University among universities in the Philippines. The THE Impact Rankings is the first global attempt to measure the contributions of universities worldwide to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching. The University is recognized for its significant initiatives in advancing SDG 14 (Life Below Water), crediting especially the University’s efforts in protecting, conserving, and strategically managing the Verde Island Passage (VIP), landing in the Global Top 200 most impactful programs. Other innovative programs and projects of the University which were instrumental in securing its WURI 2023 spot are the Adaptive Capacity-building and Technology Innovation for Occupational Hazards and Natural Disaster (ACTION) Center, and Center for Technopreneurship and Innovation (CTI) which are under the crisis management and entrepreneurial spirit categories respectively. BatStateU-The NEU and BCRMF partner for youth-led environmental solutions

Batangas State University, The National Engineering University (BatStateU-The NEU), and Batangas Coastal Resources Management Foundation (BCRMF) partnered for a unique project called the Batangas Social Innovation Challenge (BASIC). This initiative intends Batangueño youths to proactively take responsibility for their environment by promoting social innovations that address environmental challenges in Batangas Province. Through this project, BASIC shall invite youth leaders, students, young professionals, and out-of-school youth between 18 to 30 with determination, creativity, innovativeness, dedication, and passion for saving the environment and improving the environmental condition of their locality or community. Designed to create a multi-disciplinary, multi-agency, and multicultural approach to addressing environmental issues in the province, BASIC will also involve its participants in intensive design thinking workshops, proposal writing write shops, group mentoring, and a proposal pitching competition as part of the project. BASIC will choose the five best social innovations addressing environmental problems in Batangas Province and will receive ₱100,000 to implement them. This Batangas Social Innovation Challenge was officially launched on March 20, with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) by BatStateU-The NEU and BCRMF. The event was graced by BatStateU-The NEU officials led by University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo and BCRMF’s member organizations led by its President Mr. Rey Nelson B. Amparo. Overall, this collaborative project of BatStateU-The NEU and BCRMF is an encouraging step in fostering social innovation in the Philippines and an inspiring move towards a more sustainable future.
